Upper West Side Loft
Upper West Side, New York, 2014
Known officially as the Atelier - this building was constructed in the early 1900s as a group of duplex apartments with large studio spaces for artists on the lower floor of each apartment. The building itself is generally seen as the bastion of the gothic style building on the artist's historic district that is 67th Street. The apartment has a large double-height studio space with a large north-facing window that brings in soft northern light ideal for a painter or sculpture studio. The main living room replaces the original studio space and is light-filled and oriented toward the existing fireplace which was re-articulated full height. The upper floor contains more private bedroom spaces and the area was simplified to add a large walk-in closet and bathroom. The client was heavily involved with the selection of materials and colors. His refined collection of mid-century furniture pieces provides the finishing touches to an incredibly comfortable and inviting home.
