476 Broadway Loft
SoHo, New York, 2017
476 Broadway was a large 4000sqft unrenovated loft apartment in Soho when the project was first encountered. The client was a family of three, originally from Holland who wanted to accommodate extended stays of family members. They requested a finished apartment with a contemporary and minimal aesthetic expressing openness and maximization of natural light. As the proportions of the space were more square than rectangular there was plenty of window area facing both - east, and west - allowing a good amount of natural light to flood the spaces. The challenge was configuring the residence within the existing building infrastructure and accommodating large bathroom and kitchen positions within an open living space. The resulting apartment is a study of materials, light, and natural surfaces that are broad in nature. Floors are white Oak with white oil, the stone is a combination of black granite without detail, and roman travertine with subtle beige and silver veins. The limited palate enhances each material towards a decorative and warm aspect. With brushes of natural light, the apartment feels light, airy, and free from clutter and distraction.
